Pussy Willow
Pussy Willow grows well in almost any soil, but likes soil with peat moss, leaf mold or compost.
They grow best in full sun and like lots of water. They also do best pruned after blooming.
It can grow to a height of 13-25 feet.
Prune the lowest branches back to the trunk, and prune for shape. You can even cut the tree back to
a six inch stump every 2-3 years (severe pruning results in the longer stems and larger catkins).
Flowers form on the previous season's growth, not on new growth so do not prune until the flowers
have faded.
Salix discolor rosea, the Pink Pussy Willow has pale pink catkins.
Pussy Willow is a Host Plant for Viceroys, Red-Spotted Purples
Viceroys and
Red-Spotted Purples use various species of Willows as host plants, including Pussy Willow,
Sandbar Willow (Salix exigua) and
Black Willow (Salix nigra).
